Congregration Shomrei Torah co-sponsors Chaverim, an exciting new program for Sonoma County Jewish teens. Chaverim is a unique venue for social and educational events that inspire involvement in Jewish life. Members meet twice monthly for a director-led peer dinner discussion centered around Jewish ethical topics relating to teens. Teens also meet monthly for social and community events: camping, skiing, dances, services and social action.
Chaverim News� Sonoma County�s Teen group continues with its regular ongoing dinner-discussion meetings with Chaverim Director Rick Concoff. ...Special events for March included Game Night at CHOPS on March 2 and Mitzvah Day at Santa Rosa Creek on March 9. ...The creek clean-up was in conjunction with Shomrei Torah�s Environmental Action Committee. It was a spectacular success, and Chaverim made a huge contribution to that success, drawing in about 40 pairs of hands, counting the Chaverim members and their friends and family. Teens were assigned a challenging, steeply sloped section of the creek, and went after it with high energy, producing an impressively huge pile of garbage bags full of stuff that does not belong in a creek. Congratulations, Chaverim, we are so proud of you, and many thanks to Shomrei Torah�s Environmental Action Committee for inviting us to participate in this wonderful mitzvah.
Chaverim is inspired by the most successful aspects of Congregation Shomrei Torah's Tzaddikim program and Congregation Beth Ami's Kehillah program. The program is overseen by Rabbis George Gittleman and George Schlesinger with support by a parent-led Advisory Committee. Temple affiliation is not required for Chaverim families.
Rick Concoff is the Program Director for Chaverim. In 2006, Rick was honored with the Diller Award for excellence from the Bureau of Jewish Education for his work with Sonoma County teens. Rick can be reached at (707) 823-3916.
