Nothing says more about a culture and a community than food. Every recipe tells a storyabout who we are, where we come from, and what we aspire to become.

Jewish Food Journeyshonors the longstanding Shomrei Torah tradition of sharing our personal stories--ourJewish Journeys--as a way to build community and get to know each other better. By sharing our favorite recipes, we can explore our collective Jewish heritage and traditions as well as the lives we lead today in our Wine Country home.

All Shomrei Torah members are encouraged to submit a favorite recipe along with a brief story of its personal significance. Submissions must respect the guidelines for food served at Shomrei Torah.

Our cookbook will be greatly enriched by a short narrative about your recipe. Please describe the significance of this dish, how did this recipe make its journey to the North Bay? Where did you first find out about the recipe? When and why do you prepare this dish (time of year, holiday)? What makes it meaningful to you? (200-word maximum)

Please follow the following format in submitting recipes List ingredients in the amounts and order in which they will be used. Be as specific as possible using the following common abbreviations

  • cup = c
  • quart = qt
  • gallon = gal
  • ounce = oz
  • pint = pt
  • pound = lb
  • tablespoon = T
  • teaspoon = t

Write each step as clearly as possible, including cooking time, temperature, type of pan, any tips about preparation time, steps that can be completed in advanc e, cooking times, storage or anything else that might help a cook visualize the process.

Use the following as a guide:

  • All ingredients should be listed in order of use. Indicate if they are chopped, minced, melted, etc.

  • Include accurate package sizes and pan sizes needed for each recipe. Measurements should be as precise as possible.

  • Baking times should be accurate and include a test for doneness. (e.g., Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until golden. Cool completely, then cover and refrigerate overnight.)

  • Indicate whether to cook a recipe covered or not.

  • Indicate if you can make it ahead of time and if it can be frozen and/or reheated.

  • Make sure there are no "dangling" ingredients i.e., instructions that tell you to prepare an ingredient and set it aside (e.g., drain juice, reserving 1/2 cup), then the reserved ingredient isn't added to the recipe!
